Most new construction and major remodels in Summit County must now meet Colorado's new Wildfire Resiliency Code, a statewide building standard intended to help homes survive wildfire exposure.

The code sets minimum construction standards for structures in wildland-urban interface areas — essentially anywhere embers or flames from a wildfire could reach a home.

Summit Fire & EMS supports these standards as one more layer of wildfire protection for our community. Ember-resistant, hardened construction gives firefighters more time and a better chance of saving homes when wildfire strikes. Homeowners planning new construction or a major remodel should check with Summit County Community Development early in the design process to confirm which requirements apply to their project.
